DambullaCave Temples

Delve into one of the more unique places of worship in Sri Lanka when you visit the Dambulla Cave Temple. Dating back to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, this temple complex consisting of five caves, is a popular site for devotees and tourists.

The influence of the ancient kingdoms can be seen throughout the five caves. It is one of the few ancient Buddhist temples that contain artistic influences from the various kingdoms of Sri Lanka. A myriad of sculptures dating from various periods, some of them cast in gold, fill the caves. Sculptures of the Lord Buddha in the seated and reclining positions, statues of ancient kings, figures of deities, such as Vishnu and Saman are also featured among the great halls of the temple.
