Located in the north central province of Sri Lanka, the ancient city of Anuradhapura dates back to at least the 5th century BC. The city functioned as the capital of the Sinhala Kingdom from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD. As a result, there are many ruins of old structures, as well as ancient reservoirs to be seen in the capital city.
Anuradhapura is considered to be the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and has remained a popular pilgrimage site for centuries. The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is one of eight World Heritage Sites in the country, and it contains a number of historically important and religiously significant ancient temples and monasteries.
