The region of Yala is home to the popular wildlife park and bird sanctuary – the Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. It is a great place to enjoy the rustic outdoors, to embark on exciting jungle safaris, to explore shipwrecks and to experience the rich culture and history of the diverse island of Sri Lanka.
Located in the South Eastern region of Sri Lanka, the Yala National Park contains a protected area of approximately 130,000 hectares of land. The Yala Park can be entered from four gates, of which the most popular are the Palatupana and Katagamuwa entrances.
Yala is easily accessible from Tissamaharama, which is about 16km away from the Palatupana entrance. If you are travelling from Colombo, it will take you approximately five hours to travel almost 300km to get to Yala.

Useful Tips
- The best time to visit the Yala National Park is between May & August.
- Visitors are allowed in to the park twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon.
- Since Yala is located in a hot, semi-arid environment, the temperatures range from 26°C to 30°C. It is best to be prepared.
