The Grand Hotel

An old colonial building, constructed in 1828, stands out in the centre of the town of Nuwara Eliya. Built to mirror the typical architecture of Elizabethan-era England, the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya was once the holiday home of Sir Edward Barnes, Governor of Ceylon (1824-1831). It was subsequently transformed into a high-class hotel for British planters during the middle of the 19 th Century.

Today, the Hotel has evolved into an iconic landmark that marries warm Sri Lankan tradition with the façade of an English country manor.
