Culture
Once a glorious citadel built by an ancient king of Sri Lanka, today Sigiriya is an architectural marvel that successfully depicts the prosperity of the ancient kingdoms and the superior skills of the old craftsmen. A full experience of Sigiriya, covering the main Lion Rock, the summit, the frescoes, the mirror wall and the rock, terrace and boulder gardens will take you the best part of a day. Get there early in order to avoid the crowds.
If you like to experience more history and culture, head over to the glorious cave temple complex in Dambulla. Filled with grand sculptures of Lord Buddha and wall and ceiling murals dating back to ancient times, the well preserved Dambulla Cave Temple is certainly worth a visit.
Safari Rides
Book a safari ride inside the Minneriya National Park or the Kaudulla National Park if you want to see the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the country. The parks are home to plenty of other animals and birds as well, resulting in a truly fulfilling safari experience.
Hot Air Balloon Rides
It doesn’t get much more romantic than sailing amongst the clouds with your partner, while the sun rises over the lush countryside of the island. Catch a glimpse of wild elephants roaming the open plains, or of the magnificent Sigiriya rock in the distance. These hot air balloon rides have become popular for proposals, so that’s something you might want to think about!
Village Walk or Cycling Tour
Take a guided cycling trip or a village walk in the surroundings of Sigiriya and neighbouring Habarana. These tours will take you through rice paddy fields and vegetable farms to rural villages, where you will gain insight into the daily lives of Sri Lankans. If you are lucky, one of the families might invite you into their home to share a simple meal.
